De heren, Sander, Franco en Karel uit Den Haag houden het simpel: moddervette maar toch strakke riffs, meestal uptempo en vooral snel over en uit, voor de verveling toeslaat. Daar houden we dus van. Orgineel is het niet vooral niet in hun thuisland: U moet niet te diep nadenken om al eens aan Peter Pan Speedrock en The Spades te denken maar vooruit gaat het wel. Een band om live mee te maken en straalbezopen, schuim op de lippen ‘Ape Face’ en ‘Ticket to Hell’ mee te brullen.

Dat is ook toevallig. Van de week bekeek ik twee documentaires; één over de New York Dolls en één over de Chrome Cranks. Laat het Haagse Blues Junkies nu precies die twee bands samensmelten. Het trio, dat debuteerde op Motorwolf Records, heeft het licht gezien en weet exact uit welke bronnen het moet putten. Blues Junkies hanteert maar twee criteria waaran hun songs moeten voldoen. Ze moeten snel zijn en smerig. En daarbij luisteren de heren naar punk, punkrock, blues, garage en nederbeat. Precies de juiste insteek. Alsof Danko Jones zijn kleine neefjes heeft gevonden.

The Blues Junkies are from the Hague in Holland. This selftitled album is their second one, the follow up to their 2008 debut losin’ the blues. Fuck me and throw me a sixpack what a surprise. The band’s name might suggest that it’s an obscure blues album but, according to their infosheet, TBJ play hard rockin’ super-sleazy bad-ass boogie and I fully agree! The album lasts just over 30 minutes and is filled with 10 sloppy, variating hard rock songs and 1 short intro. Not only full speed but also a few moments of rest that luckily don’t take too long, the next song it’s pedal to the floor again. Don’t wanna do that at all is the exception, a 6 minute instrumental that holds your attention for the entire time. A talent they maybe inherited from the Cosmic Psychos. Peter Pan Speedrock, Zeke, Cosmic Psychos and Hellacopters are names that flash through my head while writing this review.
Listening to this album I got the same vibe i had when i first heard ‘premium quality serve loud’ from Peter Pan Speedrock. The album doesn’t have that same quality but TBJ play the same kind of music. Guitar, bass, drums, three singers, a lot of enthusiasm and energy and a tray of beer to get warmed up are all you need to deliver a great record. Of course the sound could’ve been better and the drums should’ve been more upfront in the mix but frankly, I don’t give a shit about those things with a record like this that almost breaths energy.
And for all those who think that this review is too short, so is this record, I can’t wait for the next one and grap a beer in advance => Cheers!

REVIEW: DIGITAL STEEL 2009 is a post from THE BLUES JUNKIES.

Originaires des Pays-Bas, de La Haye plus précisément, les trois énervés de The Blues Junkies n’ont pas simplement passé leur temps à regarder la mer, ils se sont aussi nourris sans modération du rock ‘n’ roll des MC5, New York Dolls, Motörhead pour aboutir à un punk rock extrêmement tonique et sans concessions, nettoyant les oreilles à fond et faisant place nette dans la cervelle. Le mieux, c’est qu’ils ne perdent pas le blues de vue et assaisonnent leurs riffs grossiers et brutaux de petites touches bluesy, réunissant ainsi les forces essentielles du rock ‘n’ roll pour l’énergie et du blues pour l’âme.

Le groupe a déjà sorti un premier album du nom de "Losin’ the blues" en 2008 sur le légendaire label Motorwolf. Ce deuxième opus éponyme qui sort sur Langweilgkeit Records (les disques de l’ennui, en allemand) a été enregistré aux studios Excess de Rotterdam et mérite absolument d’être écouté.

La voix passée au papier de verre du chanteur Sander, qui tient aussi la guitare, est là pour rappeler qu’on n’a pas besoin de hurler comme une sirène ou pousser des grognements de cyclope pour atteindre son but et placer un chant percutant entre les deux yeux. Ses deux autres camarades bassiste et batteur se lancent aussi dans la brèche et accompagnent leur chanteur dans tous les coups les plus fumants, que ce soit le rock ‘n’ roll bien binaire à la Ramones ("100 miles") ou le heavy metal imparable à la Motörhead ("Ticket to hell") ou groovy selon une recette inédite UFO/Led Zeppelin/Ted Nugent ("Backdoor"). Les Blues Junkies ont une très bonne tenue de route quand il s’agit de faire de la vitesse car ils arrivent à être juvéniles sans faire dans l’adolescence niaise, à sonner frais sans être naïf ("Jesus loves you", "Ape face"). Le dernier titre "Don’t wanna do that at all" donne dans la grande jam pesante et puissante, avec solo de guitare hanté par les géants du blues et du rock ‘n’ roll. Un final olympien pour un groupe qui a du muscle.
